Comforts of Home
I spent my childhood surrounded by nature. No street lights, no neighbours for miles and stars that didn’t have to fight with anything but the clouds to be seen.
That was followed by the majority of my adult life in the city; Toronto, Tokyo, Melbourne. The excitement, the sights, smells and sounds. Constant motion and stimulation. I honed my skills as a designer and mother amid the bustle of these places. Navigating the pace and balance of running my own business and family as a solo proprietor of both.
It also exhausted me.
Trips home to my parents were rejuvenating and became more frequent over the years. It got harder to leave the peace and quiet and return to kinetic pace of the city. I decided two years ago that it was time to make the move back to Niagara and slowly started to put the pieces in motion to make it a reality.
We transitioned from a mid-town walk-up in the city to a one floor cottage on the shores of Lake Erie this past summer. We scouted the region for a home that would suit our small family (one of the two kids remained in the city for university) and happily found a century old gem that seemed to be calling my name. Laden with original details and obviously well loved through the years, the home is in need of updates to help with efficiency and best use of space.
I’m excited to have a project of my own to sink my teeth into as well as having our first, owned home since being on my own (which seems like a lifetime ago).
I’m using this on-line space of mine to share with you a bit of my design process and for inspiration and tips.
I’m not sure exactly where we will end up, but I’m looking forward to the journey and am happy to have you along for the ride.
